Thousands of young Catholics from around the globe will be travelling to take part in World Youth Day (WYD) 2011 in the presence of the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI.
Previous WYDs have been attended by Juventutem, the worldwide youth movement for young people (age 16 to 35) who are attached to the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. This has proved a great opportunity to give a powerful witness amongst the world's Catholic youth to the Traditional Mass and orthodox teaching of the Catholic Church. At WYD in Madrid, Juventutem will be there again and the Latin Mass Society is subsidising the cost for young Catholics in England and Wales attending with them. More details below.
At WYD 2011, Juventutem will take part in the official events, but, importantly, will have its own chapel and daily Mass in the Extraordinary Form plus its own orthodox catechesis classes.
Prior to the WYD gathering in Madrid, the week before (9 to 15 August), Juventutem is organising an optional retreat for those attending WYD. This is the perfect way to prepare for the event. This will take place at a former convent for Discalced Carmelites at Amorebieta-Etxano near Bilbao in northern Spain. Traditional Mass, Lauds, Rosary and Compline, plus spiritual conferences will prepare the delegates to give an appropriate witness at Madrid the following week.
The retreat will be divided into different age groups for 'students' and 'young adults', and will also incorporate recreational activities, including visits to the cities of Burgos and Bilbao, wine tasting in Rioja for older participants, one-day walking pilgrimages through the mountainous local countryside and more.
The Latin Mass Society is providing sponsorship to young people who attend either WYD Madrid only with Juventutem or the Retreat and WYD with them.
The Latin Mass Society will cover half the cost of attending with Juventutem (which includes accommodation, food, and travel within Spain) plus half the cost of your airfare to Spain to join the Juventutem group.
Juventutem are offering the following packages:
WYD only €250.00 (airfare not included)
Retreat and WYD €400.00 (airfare not included)
The Latin Mass Society will pay half the cost of the above, plus half the cost of the airfare to Spain. In Sterling this works out at £95.00 for WYD only and £170.00 for the Retreat and WYD combined. We believe the cost of the Juventutem packages is very good value for money, but the LMS sponsorship will make it affordable for many more young people. Please bear in mind that this is a limited offer, so early booking is recommended - first come, first served.
It will be up to each person attending to arrange their own flight and travel plans to Spain and make the necessary payments to airlines. In the Sterling prices quoted above, we have included a subsidy of half the cost of a cheap flight.
You may like to meet up with other young people who are attnding WYD with Juventutem from England and Wales so that you can travel together as a group. You will need to arrange this yourself. However, if you let the LMS know that you would like to do this, then nearer the time we could put you in touch with each other. Even better, if you are willing to co-ordinate a group to travel together, please email us to let us know.

If you have any questions about the practical arrangements surrounding the event, Juventutem has appointed a Co-ordinator for England and Wales for the visit to WYD that you can speak to. Teresa will, amongst other things, be helping those who wish to travel to Spain together with other people attending WYD through Juventutem.
