Our Lady of LourdesWe're Going to Lourdes!

23 JANUARY 2012

The LMS's first pilgrimage to Lourdes with the sick will take place from Monday 17 to Friday 21 September 2012.

Following the Chairman's appeal in the Winter edition of Mass of Ages magazine, we have had several offers of help from laity and clergy alike who have considerable experience of pilgrimages to Lourdes. We have therefore booked space on one of the tour operators' schedules and will fly from Stanstead Airport. The all-inclusive price for the week will be in the region of £600 (TBC).

Needless to say, all Masses and devotions will be according to the Traditional Roman Rite.

If you are interested in coming with us, either as someone in good health or as someone suffering from sickness or in need of medical care, please contact us as soon as possible to register you interest.

You can either email us on info@lms.org.uk, with the subject line 'Lourdes Pilgrimage', or phone the LMS office on 020 7404 7284.

The dates again: 17 to 21 September 2012.

Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us!

Retreat on the Sacrament of Matrimony, Open to All

23 JANUARY 2012

Painting of Saint Joachim and Saint AnneWe all agree on the necessity of promoting the family as an institution, so badly attacked in our modern world.

Whether you are married or not, were married or intend to remain celibate; reflecting on the riches of this sacrament will enable you to appreciate it better, for your own benefit if you are married, or simply to support spouses or prospective spouses among your relatives, friends and colleagues in their beautiful calling.

For this reason, Fr de Malleray FSSP, is hosting a retreat at Douai Abbey on 24-26 February on the theme: ‘The beautiful sacrament of Matrimony’.

Starts Friday 24th February 5pm (arrival from 4pm) – ends Sunday 26th February 2012 (departure from 4pm). Please note: depending on your working hours and means of transportation, later arrival or earlier departure times should not prevent you from attending.

Location: Douai Abbey, Upper Woolhampton, Reading, Berkshire, RG7 5TQ, England. Abbey website: www.douaiabbey.org.uk. Nearest train station (1.2 mile): Midgham (between Reading and Newbury).

Cost: Substantial discounts granted by Abbey: please contact the FSSP if money is an obstacle. Or: £150/person for single room or £120 for shared room, full board, including VAT.

Booking: please send a £30 deposit to the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter, St John Fisher House, 17 Eastern Avenue, Reading RG1 5RU, Berkshire, England or Tel: +44 (0)118 966 52 84 for more details.

Bp Seamus Cunningham attends EF Mass at St Joseph's Church, GatesheadBishop Seamus Cunningham Attends Extraordinary Form Mass in Gateshead

16 JANUARY 2012

Hexham and Newcastle Joint Local Rep David O'Neill reports:

'As part of his Episcopal Visitation to St Joseph’s Church in Gateshead Bishop Seamus attended in choro the weekly Extraordinary Form parish Mass at 12 noon on Sunday 15 January 2012.

'His diary has hitherto prevented him from being present at the EF Masses celebrated in St Mary’s Cathedral, so he was warmly welcomed by parishioners who attend the weekly Mass. The Mass was celebrated by Fr Adrian Dixon the parish priest and Bishop Seamus preached at this and all other Masses that day. His homily was received very well by the congregation when he spoke of the need for prayer & for silence. The Extraordinary Form of the Mass is noted for the absence of chatter within the church both before and after Mass. The bishop’s homily broadly reflected the recent Pastoral Letter sent out by the newly consecrated Bishop of Aberdeen who also stressed the need for silence in prayer. Bishop Seamus reminded us all that everyone is called to evangelise and the best form of evangelisation both to our own families and others is the example we show.

'The Mass was a Missa Cantata with the music provided by the Schola Sancti Baedae under the direction of Dr Michael Dunn and accompanied by Dorothy Allen on the organ. The servers were David O’Neill (MC), Leo Darroch (Thurifer), Aidan and Martin McGregor (Acolytes), Keith McAllister (Crucifer) and Carl and James Watson (Torchbearers).

'Following Mass Bishop Seamus was at the church door to meet the congregation and he blessed the servers before leaving.'

A Happy 2012 to All Our Readers!

2 JANUARY 2012

Prayers and Best Wishes for the New Year from all at the LMS. 2012 looks set fair to be a good year for the LMS and the Traditional Mass in England and Wales. Some highlights to watch out for: the LMS's Pilgrimage to York on Saturday, 24 March in honour of St Margaret Clitherow, Our Eighth Priests' Training Conference (16-19 April at Belmont Abbey, Hereford). Our annual Pilgrimage to the Shrine of Holywell in North Wales on Sunday, 1 July (a coach will be going from London), our 3rd Annual Walking Pilgrimage to Walsingham, 24-26 August (a coach will be going from London on the Sunday).

We have a number of other big events up our sleeves, but more of those over the coming months. This is in addition to the many hundreds of Masses organised up and down the country week in, week out, and the local pilgrimages and other events that the LMS is responsible for.

Of course, in order to make all this happen, we rely on the support of ordinary Catholics who are members of the LMS. And we could always use more! Why not make it your New Year's Resolution to join the LMS. You can join online here. You'll be supporting our nationwide work of promoting the cause of the Traditional Mass so that all Catholics have reasonable access to it, as desired by the Holy Father. A Happy New Year to you!
