Rt Rev Alan Hopes, auxiliary bishop of Westminster, celebrated the LMS's annual Requiem Mass in Westminster Cathedral on Saturday, 19 November for the repose of the souls of all deceased members. The bishop was assisted by Fr Andrew Southwell, the LMS National Chaplain, as assistant priest, Fr Tim Finigan as deacon and Fr David Irwin as sub-deacon.
In his sermon, Bishop Hopes reminded the congregation that the Catholic Doctrine of Purgatory is a comforting one that shows God’s great mercy and that we, as Catholics, have a duty, in charity, to pray for the Church Suffering, the Holy Souls.
Before Mass began, the Officers of the LMS, led by Chairman Dr Joseph Shaw, laid a wreath on the tomb of Cardinal Heenan in thanks for the Cardinal’s role in helping to preserve the Traditional Mass in England and Wales. 2011 marks the fortieth anniversary of the ‘Heenan Indult’ which was made by Pope Paul VI at the personal request of the cardinal, following the LMS’s own request for this.
LMS General Manager, Mike Lord said: ‘The LMS’s annual Requiem is a solemn reminder to all attached to the Extraordinary Form of what we owe those who have gone before us in the struggle to preserve the Traditional Mass.’

East Anglia Local Representative Kevin Marshall reports:
' I was overjoyed to hear the news from Fr Michael Collis of All Souls, Peterborough, that the Old Rite Mass celebrated on the feast of All Souls was a great success with some 64 people attending. We are all so very grateful to Fr Michael and the parish priest, Fr David for their great generosity in supporting the Mass. They can be assured that we shall keep them in our prayers. The next Old Rite Mass will take place on Friday, 9 December at 7pm. Please do all you can to support this Mass.'
The full address of the church is: Church of St Peter and All Souls, Park Road, Peterborough PE1 2RS.

In the liturgy we pray with the faithful of every age – the past, the present and the future are joined in one great chorus of prayer. As I can state from personal experience, it is inspiring to learn how it all developed, what a great experience of faith is reflected in the structure of the Mass, and how it has been shaped by the prayer of many generations.”

The LMS holds its annual Requiem Mass for the repose of the souls of all our deceased members this Saturday, 19 November at 2.30pm. All are very welcome to attend this public event (not just LMS members!). The celebrant is Bishop Alan Hopes, so it will be a Pontifical High Mass of Requiem. Mass will be followed by Absolutions at the Catafalque. We wish Bishop Hopes good health after he was forced to pull out of last week's Confirmations at the last moment.
Just before Mass starts, a wreath will be laid on the tomb of Cardinal Heenan, in remembrance of the 'Heenan Indult' - the first official concession by the Church authorities for the celebration of the Traditional Mass since its attempted suppression following the introduction of the Missal of Paul VI in 1969. The 40th anniversary of the Heenan Indult falls this year (in fact it was on 5 November) and there is a fascinating commemorative article about it in the new edition of Mass of Ages magazine to mark the anniversary. You can order a copy online for the bargain price of £3.50 including UK delivery.
If you are in central London, please do come along to the Requiem. Although the Mass intention is for the deceased members of the LMS, there is nothing preventing anyone offering up their assistance at Mass for the repose of the souls of their own loved ones.
The US-based blog, Musings of a Pertinacious Papist (scroll to bottom of posting) has praised the revamped Mass of Ages magazine and the approach that we are taking to reach out to new adherents of the Traditional Mass. Thank you PP.
Here's an excerpt from the blog:
'The LMS intends to broaden the appeal of the magazine: they recognize, as many of us observers in the Extraordinary Form world do, that a modern approach to marketing the EF is called for in today’s media-savvy culture. Printed in full color throughout, with a more attention-grabbing and headline-filled cover, the magazine is designed to catch the attention of those skimming magazine racks who may not yet be familiar with the Traditional Latin Mass. Think of it as an effort to blend the modern media appearance of a People Magazine with a more positive version of The Latin Mass Magazine. Such an outreach effort has not yet been attempted by any other periodical serving readers interested in the Tridentine Mass.'
The LMS would like to express its sincere thanks to Rt Revd John Sherrington, the very recently consecrated auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Westminster, for stepping into the breach to allow our annual Traditional Confirmations ceremony at St James's, Spanish Place in London to go ahead this afternoon.
Bishop Alan Hopes had been intending to confer the Confirmations, but sadly ill health forced him to withdraw at the very last moment. Fortunately, at less than a day's notice, Bishop Sherrington agreed to confer the Sacrament instead.
It is worth emphasising that these were Bishop Sherrington's first Confirmations in the Traditional Rite, but despite this, the ceremony proceeded seamlessly, impressing both clergy in the sanctuary and members of the congregation alike.
Following the Confirmations, Bishop Sherrington celebrated Pontifical Benediction. The 31 candidates, their sponsors, families and friends then went to a crowded St James's Parish Social Centre for a celebration buffet lunch where the bishop cut a commemorative cake and chatted with many people.
Our thanks also go to Fr Andrew Southwell, LMS National Chaplain, and Fr Tim Finigan for their invaluable help with the ceremonies. All in all, a very successful and joyous occasion.
More photographs of the day can be viewed here.
We are sad to report the recent death of Miss Monica Flynn who will be known to parishioners of St James's, Spanish Place, London and to many others. Her Funeral Mass, in the Extraordinary Form, will take place at Our Lady of Lourdes and St Michael, Osborn Road, Uxbridge UB8 1UE on Friday, 18 November at 12 noon. The celebrant will be Fr Nicholas Schofield, the parish priest. Requiescat in pace.
There will be a Traditional Mass in Hertford this Saturday, 12 November, at 11.00am at the Church of the Immaculate Conception and St. Joseph, 23 St. John’s Street, Hertford SG14 1RX. The celebrant is parish priest Fr Terry Phipps.
There are only two dedicated Catholic cemeteries in Greater London and at one of them, St Patrick's in Leytonstone, the LMS will be organising a Sung Requiem this Saturday, 12 November at 10.30am, to mark the Month of the Holy Souls.
The full address of the chapel is: St Patrick's Catholic Cemetery Chapel, Langthorne Road, Leytonstone, London E11 4HL. Please try to attend this Mass for the Faithful Departed if you are in the area.
The LMS's Arundel and Brighton Diocesan Representative, Anne-Marie Mackie-Savage reports:
'It was a very atmospheric, murky, and cold day on Saturday when we drove to Arundel for the Requiem for the Holy Souls. Fr Sean Finnegan was the Celebrant, Fr Alexander Lucie-Smith, Deacon, and Deacon Seamus Mahon was Sub Deacon. Many thanks to them.
'Fr Lucie-Smith preached on a topic that doesn't get much time from an ordinary parish pulpit, that grief is part of life, and the Church gives you the hope, and the tools in the form of prayers and Masses for dead loved ones, to enable you to cope with it and also help the dead. He also reminded us that prayers for the dead are as old as the Church, quoting one of my favourites from St Monica, about being buried anywhere, but begging to be remembered at the altar of God.
'The choir of St Mary Magdalen, Brighton, led by Clare, came along too and sang beautifully, the Dies Irae always makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck, and they really did on Saturday. Clare also took some photos, which you can find HERE. Andrew and his serving team, also from St Mary Magdalen, were as polished as ever. Thank you, Team Brighton!
'Thanks also to the sacristans at the Cathedral, who were very helpful in making sure we had everything we needed.
'And of course, thank you also to everyone who came! I hope you found the Mass as beautiful as I did.
'It is a real privilege and a real comfort to help our deceased family and friends by praying for them. It must be truly awful to believe that when you have lost someone, that's it, the end, gone forever. So I also love cemeteries. I visited ours last week, it was grey, murky and cold then too, but wandering about reading the headstones, I felt so peaceful.'
LMS Joint Local Rep for Hexham and Newcastle Diocese, David O'Neill writes:
'Solemn High Mass in St Mary's Cathedral, Newcastle upon Tyne
Thanks to the good offices of Cathedral Dean Father Peter Leighton we once again celebrated an EF Solemn High Mass in our cathedral church. The celebrant & preacher on this occasion was Fr Michael Brown (St Mary's,Forest Hall) who is Northern Chaplain of the LMS, the deacon was Fr David Phillips (St Mary & St Thomas, Stella) and the subdeacon was Fr Shaun Swales (SS Joseph, Patrick & Cuthbert, Coxhoe). The Proper for the Feast of the Holy Relics was sung by the Schola Sancti Baedae and the Ordinary, Viadana's Missa L'Hora Passa, was sung by a choir under the direction of Shaun Turnbull. Both choirs contributed motets including Bruckner's Locus Iste and the Plainchant Attended Domine. Two diocesan priests were in the congregation.
'The EF Mass replaced the usual OF 10am Mass in the cathedral and the congregation numbered between 150-200.
'Sadly, our diocesan bishop - Seamus Cunningham - was unable to be present due to a full diary but we hope he might attend at some time in the future.'
More photos of the Mass, taken by Frank Erskine, can be seen here.
